Jacob has been in the building industry for 20 years, in and around Canterbury this whole time. Working on and running several gold award winning homes in the Master Builders House of the Year Awards. This includes running multi million dollar projects, down to simple one day tasks. After 3 years of entry level building Jacob moved to the architectural sector for 14 years. Now with all that experience and industry knowledge Hawkins Built was established. In his last year of his apprenticeship he entered the Apprentice of The Year competition and placed second in the Central South Island competition. After completing his apprenticeship he furthered his study with the National Certificate in Leading Hand.

Specialising in residential construction, renovations, and custom builds, Hawkins Built Ltd offers a hands-on approach from concept to completion. Jacob brings practical building expertise and on-site leadership, while Latia manages operations, client coordination, and project planning. Together, they combine technical skill with efficient project management, creating a seamless experience for homeowners seeking dependable and professional building services.

Since its launch, Hawkins Built Ltd has grown through word-of-mouth referrals and a reputation for quality workmanship. The company prides itself on transparency, reliability, and delivering projects that stand the test of time. Whether undertaking small upgrades or full-scale builds, Hawkins Built Ltd remains committed to craftsmanship, integrity, and building spaces that clients are proud to call their own.

Meet the Team

  • Jacob Hawkins

    Director

With over 20 years of hands-on experience in the building industry, Jacob brings a depth of knowledge, craftsmanship, and practical problem-solving to every project. As a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) and a member of Master Builders, he has worked across a wide range of residential construction, from new builds and renovations to extensions and complex structural work. This experience ensures every stage of the build is handled with precision, care, and a strong understanding of New Zealand building standards and best practices.

Outside of work, Jacob enjoys playing rugby, being involved in the local community by coaching junior rugby, and spending quality time with his family.

  • Latia Hawkins

    Director

Based in the office, Latia helps keep projects organised and running smoothly.  She began her career in construction as a receptionist and project coordinator, gaining valuable industry knowledge that supports her role today.

  • Steve Wilson

    Carpenter

Steve has been with us since 2022. Originally, he and Jacob worked together at another building company, where Jacob supported Steve through his apprenticeship after he made the big career change from being a chef to becoming a qualified builder.

Steve brings great experience, a strong work ethic, and plenty of personality to the team. If you hear laughter on site, there’s a good chance Steve’s the one telling a joke!

  • Corey Taylor

    Carpenter

Corey was our very first employee, starting out as an apprentice in 2021. Originally a mechanic, Corey decided to make a change in career and hasn’t looked back since. Having been friends with Jacob since high school, they work seamlessly together and know each other well — something that shows in the quality and teamwork Corey brings every day.

  • Lukas Taiaroa

    Apprentice

Lukas has been with us since 2024, joining the team shortly after finishing high school. Since then, he’s settled in brilliantly and become a valued part of our workplace. Lukas consistently brings a positive attitude and strong work ethic, and it’s been great to see him grow in his role.

Outside of work, Lukas is a talented rugby player and enjoys spending his time on the field.
